The Buck Creek Schoolhouse was built in 1858, just a few years prior to the Civil War. It was constructed using locally fired brick. The timber used in the construction was harvested and processed locally as well. The original roof structure, which used this timber, is still in place today.
The Buck Creek Schoolhouse served the community of rural Champaign County for almost 6 decades. It operated as the only schoolhouse in District 2 Subsection 30 during this time. It was taken out of service in 1917 when many schoolhouses in the area were consolidated with the construction of larger school buildings.
Once out of service, the building was purchased by Argyle Long. The schoolhouse stayed in the
Long family until 2002 when Lucy M. Long sold the property, just a few months prior to her death. The schoolhouse remained mostly uninhabited over the next twenty years. At one point it was used as an off-grid art studio. It changed hands several times throughout the early 2020's before finally being purchased by us (Jesse and Jessica Crawford) in 2024.
Our goal is to save this storied piece of history and share it with world. We plan to have this property operational to meet the needs of a couple looking for a romantic getaway, history buffs searching for that next adventure back in time or anyone that needs grounded and rejuvenated on the prairie.
